Jenny and Dave who blog about living as a westerner in India on ‘Our Delhi Struggle‘ pointed out a fascinating TED talk that I had not noticed before.

Nandan Nilekani, the visionary co-founder of outsourcing pioneer Infosys, explains four brands of ideas that will determine whether India can continue its recent breakneck progress.

Today’s video is Seth Godin at TED2009 and in it he gives an inspiring talk about ‘tribes’ and ‘creating a movement’. Seth’s Blog is one I try to read everyday, I suggest you go check it out. And if you don’t know what TED is you should go there  too.

You might have noticed that I have been tinkering away behind the scenes and there are a few new things here on the rossbennetts.com blog:

  • WP Greet Box is going to say hi when you first visit a post, and it delivers a tailored message depending upon where you came from… I think it’s pretty cool.
  • ‘Ads by Google’ have appeared in the sidebar using the Easy AdSense plugin and under photos and videos (with AdSense Under Image: reloaded)… I’ve tried to keep them minimal and relatively discrete… if you see anything that interests you, please click the link :) everybody has bills to pay.
  • I’ve imported many of the posts from my two other blogs over on Blog.une, Owe My Eyeball and Ross M. W. Blog. That meant I had to install the “Viper’s Video Quicktags” plugin, which almost seamlessly allowed me to import the video previously embedded with Anarchy Media Player which is getting a bit old these days.

There are more changes coming… just you wait… I hope you enjoy…

At this year’s TED, Capt. Charles Moore of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation gave a short talk on how plastic waste is choking the seas, killing birds and poisoning fish. Anyone who has been inspired by Sylvia Earle’s talk and wish will not want to miss this devastating presentation.

Sylvia Earle: Here’s how to protect the blue heart of the planet (TED Prize winner!)

Legendary ocean researcher Sylvia Earle shares astonishing images of the ocean — and shocking stats about its rapid decline — as she makes her TED Prize wish: that we will join her in protecting the vital blue heart of the planet.

Can you help Sylvia make her wish come true?

[Blogger's Note: Anna H. and I watched this live online and it was great to see all the support offered to Sylvia during the Q&A session after her talk... A director and a production house offered their assistance to publicise her message... Can't wait to see 'An Invonvenient Aquatic Truth'...    :)
I think any 'vegetarian' who stll eats fish really needs to listen to Sylvia Earle... ]

Beyond the crisis, mindboggling science and the arrival of Homo evolutis

Even as mega-banks topple, Juan Enriquez says the big reboot is yet to come. But don’t look for it on your ballot — or in the stock exchange. It’ll come from science labs, and it promises keener bodies and minds. Our kids are going to be … different.

Barry Schwartz at TED2009
Barry Schwartz makes a passionate call for “practical wisdom” as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues powerfully that rules often fail us, incentives often backfire, and practical, everyday wisdom will help rebuild our world.

From Mark @ BoingBoing.net:

Al Gore is showing animation of the Arctic Ice cap. Over the last 25 years the permanent ice has diminished. A massive amount of frozen carbon is being released. In some shallow lakes in Alaska, methane is bubbling out of the water. He plays a video of a woman igniting methane coming out of an ice hole in a lake.

Ice in West Antarctica and Himalayas are rapidly melting.

California seeing a 40% decline in Sierra snow pack. Leading to dramatic increase in fires.

Ocean dead zones are growing.

Deforestation, coal, and oil are the main causes of global warming. Says there’s no such thing as “clean coal” — it’s one of the main causes of global warming.
